The Leadership Evolution That Unlocks Freedom & Growth

The Trap of “Doing It All”

If you’re still the one holding all the strings in your business, you’re not leading, you’re managing. And managing will only take you so far before you hit a wall.

You’ve built something incredible: a business that generates consistent revenue, clients who respect you, and a reputation as a leader in your space. But behind the scenes? It still feels like you are the glue holding it all together. You’re managing deadlines, overseeing client onboarding, putting out tech fires, and making sure no balls get dropped.

The truth? You don’t want to “do it all.” You want to lead. You want freedom, trust, and the ability to grow without burning out.

And just a few days ago, I was reminded of exactly what that shift looks like in real life.

The CEO Growth Ceiling

When my daughter boarded a plane to New Zealand two days ago - 12,000 km away from our home in Canada - I felt a wave of emotions. She’s one of my favourite people in the world, and I’ll miss her like mad. But I’m also bursting with pride. She has a two-year work visa, and the courage to move across the world with nothing but her adventurous spirit and her belief that: “I can do this.”

And I know I helped instill that independence. Not by holding her hand every step of the way, but by letting her try, fail, struggle, and rise again. I was always nearby, but I didn’t swoop in and solve everything for her. That’s how she became the brave woman who can thrive on her own.

This is the same growth ceiling I see in so many entrepreneurs. When you never let your team step into responsibility, when you keep “doing it all” because it feels faster or safer, your business never develops the independence it needs to scale. You become the bottleneck, and everything grinds to a halt without your input.

The False Belief: “It’s Faster If I Do It Myself”

How many times have you thought: “It’s just easier if I do it myself?” (🙋🏻‍♀️ So guilty.)

It feels true in the moment. But that belief is exactly what keeps you trapped. It’s the same cultural message women have been handed for decades - that we can “do it all.” Raise kids, run households, lead businesses, manage teams. But the reality? “Doing it all” leaves us overextended, exhausted, and stuck.

In business, just like in parenting, if you never let go, no one else learns how to step up. Your team can’t grow into leaders if you never give them the chance.

The CEO Shift: From Doer to Leader

Being a CEO isn’t about knowing every detail, approving every decision, or micromanaging every process. It’s about setting vision, focusing on strategy, and trusting your team to carry out the execution.

When my daughter got on that plane, I was reminded of what true leadership looks like. Letting go isn’t easy. But her independence was born from the space I gave her to figure things out. And now, she’s thriving because of it.

Your team is no different. When you keep control of everything, you rob them of the opportunity to grow. But when you step back, give them room to own their work, and guide instead of micromanage—you create a culture where independence and excellence thrive.

What’s Possible When You Step Fully Into CEO Leadership

Here’s the truth: when you stop managing and start leading, your entire business shifts.

  • Instead of constant chaos, there’s clarity.
  • Instead of being reactive, you’re proactive.
  • Instead of being a glorified project manager, you step fully into your role as CEO.

Imagine this: launches that feel organized and calm. A team that knows what to do without your constant check-ins. The freedom to focus on growth, client work, and thought leadership. The ability to shut your laptop at the end of the day knowing things will keep running without you.

That’s what’s waiting on the other side of this shift.

How to Start Making the Shift Today

This isn’t an overnight change. It’s a leadership evolution. But here are a few steps you can take right now:

  • Identify where you’re the bottleneck. Notice the places where your business slows down because everything routes through you. Use my Backend Business Sh*t Show Audit to find out where your bottlenecks are.
  • Empower your team with systems. Create processes so they don’t need to ask you for every little thing.
  • Shift from “doing” to “leading.” Ask yourself before taking on a task: “Is this mine to do, or mine to delegate?”

Just like parenting evolves - from doing everything for your kids, to letting them stand on their own - your role as CEO evolves too. The sooner you step into leadership, the sooner your business can grow without burning you out.

Conclusion: You Don’t Have to Do It All

When my daughter moved across the world, it hit me: her independence wasn’t an accident. It was the result of me choosing not to “do it all” for her. And in business, the same is true. The independence, growth, and success you crave won’t come from holding tighter. They’ll come from letting go.

The sooner you stop managing and start leading, the sooner your business becomes scalable, sustainable, and freeing.
